Reber, James

James H. "Jim" Reber, 68, former Harvey County treasurer, died Thursday (Nov. 8, 2001) at his home in rural Newton.

He was born Feb. 27, 1933, to Henry B. and Mollie (Phillips) Reber in Newton.  His parents preceded him in death.  He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955.

He married Elizabeth Smith Sept. 7, 1957, in Sedgwick.  She survives of the home.

He retired as Harvey County treasurer in October.  he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, member and past president of the Newton Lions Club, member of the American Legion and member and past president of the Kansas State Treasurers Association.  he enjoyed gardening and cooking.

Other survivors include: two sons, Bryan Reber and his wife Sharon of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Steve Reber and his wife Kristen of Newton; a sister-in-law, Mary Alice Reber of Newton; a grandson, Joe Reber of Newton; and a granddaughter, Hannah Reber of Newton.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Reber.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 9) and from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 10) at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton.  Family will greet friends from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Funeral servic will be 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Revs. Mike Keating of the Church, Jon Jones of East Heights United Methodist Church in Wichita, and Loren Hickerson of First United Church of Christ in Newton officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church choir or youth, the Union Rescue Mission, and the American Cancer Society Lymphoma Research, all in care of the funeral home.
