Harold E.
Schmidt, 79, Salina, died Monday, March 19, 2007.
Mr. Schmidt
was born Dec. 24, 1927, in Newton. He was director of elementary education for
the Salina public schools. He was also a principal and teacher at Hageman,
Franklin, Schilling and Gleniffer Hill schools in Salina and public schools in
Brainerd, Walton and Hesston.
He married
Mavis V. Almquist on June 4, 1988, in Salina. He was a member of University
United Methodist Church and past president of Sunflower Lions Club and the
Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel. His hobbies were piano tuning,
playing piano for Sunflower Lions Club, photography and travel.
He earned
his bachelor's degree from Bethel College in Newton, graduating in 1949. He
earned his master's degree in education from Wichita State University,
graduating in 1960.
He was
preceded in death by his first wife, Verna, in 1987.
Survivors
include his wife, Mavis, of Salina; three sons, Mark Schmidt and wife Martha of
North Hollywood, Calif., David Almquist of Denver and Adam Bonilla and wife
Marie of Salina; two daughters, Debi Vanwey of Austin, Texas, and Jane Cox and
husband Randy of Powder Springs, Ga.; four brothers, Wayne Coil and wife Sue of
Shelbyville, Ind., Delmer Krehbiel and wife Sigrid of Irving, Texas, Roy
Krehbiel and wife Marie of Wichita, and Jim Krehbiel of Haven; two sisters,
Miriam Claassen and husband John of White Water and Rosella Holgersen and
husband Otto of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Marie Bonilla, Michael
Mulkey, Jessica Zavala, Joseph Zavala, Sarah Laury and Jenna Cox; four
great-grandchildren, Alexxis, Victor, Elizabeth and Patrick; and private
caregivers, Joyce and Leon Marrs of Salina.
The funeral
will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at University United Methodist Church. Burial will
be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
