Fredrick 'Fred' A. Schlender
MOUNDRIDGE - Fredrick 'Fred'
A. Schlender, 84, dairy farmer, died Saturday (Jan. 14, 2006) in rural
Moundridge. He was born Oct. 11, 1921, to Milton C. and Edna M. (Nanninga)
Schlender in Newton. He married Gwendolyn (Gwen) Farquhar Aug. 8, 1947, in
College Springs, Iowa. She survives of Moundridge. He was a longtime Moundridge
and Burrton resident. He was a 1939 graduate of Moundridge High School. He was
a member of United Methodist Church in Moundridge. He was a member of the
American Legion, Rosser C.
Fraser Post No. 340 of Moundridge, Halstead-Burrton Veterans of Foreign Wars
and was commander of the Wichita Chapter of Ex-Prisoners of War.
During World War II, he was
with the Second Division of the U.S. Army at the D-Day Invasion and the Battle
of the Bulge, where he was captured.
Other survivors include: a
son, Fredrick "Rick" Schlender Jr. of Burrton; daughters, Joyce
McDowell of Halstead, Marilyn Wilkens of Hutchinson and Betty Matt of Frisco,
Texas; granddaughters, Denise Wilkens, Lynette Wilkens and Erica Schlender;
brothers, Melvin Schlender of Wichita, Harold Schlender of McPherson, John
Schlender of Manhattan and Keith Schlender of Holland, Ohio; sisters, Bethe
Cowan of Topeka, Cathie Becker of Newton and Lois Propp of Willmat, Minn.
He also was preceded in death
by a grandson, Tyler Allen Schlender.
Visitation will be from 3 to
8 p.m. Tuesday with family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moundridge
Funeral Home.
Graveside service will be 1
p.m. Wednesday at Mound Township Cemetery in Moundridge.
Memorial service will be 2
p.m. Wednesday at Moundridge United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeanine Rishel
officiating.

established with Moundridge United Methodist Church, Burrton United Methodist
Church and Memorial Home, all in care of the funeral home, 115 E. Cole, Box
410, Moundridge, KS 67107.
