Carol Rich Andreas

Carol Rich Andreas, 71, died Dec. 8, 2004, at her home in Fort Collins, Colo. She was the daughter of Willis and Hulda Rich who were longtime residents of North Newton. She was a niece of Margaret Rich of North Newton and a cousin of Dwight and LaVonne Platt and Kamala Platt of rural Newton and Dumont and Barbara Schmidt of rural Whitewater. On Dec. 12, 2004, more than 80 friends and family gathered in Colorado to commemorate and celebrate her life. Carol grew up in North and attended public schools and Bethel College. In 1954, she received her master's degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota and in 1967 a Ph. D. In sociology from Wayne State University. She taught at a number of universities both in the United States and Peru, most recently at the University of Northern Colorado, until she retired in 1994.

Carol was an internationally known social activist who was concerned with justice and women's rights issues around the globe. She organized protests against the Vietnam War and was active in the feminist movement in Detroit in the 1960s. During the 1970s, she lived in Chile and Peru, where she was involved with the struggles of working class women. Since the late 1970s she had lived in Colorado, where she was concerned to better the conditions faced by immigrant workers. On the basis of her research and experience, she authored numerous social research papers and four books: Sex and Caste in America (1971), Nothing Is as It Should Be: A North American Woman in Chile (1976), When Women Rebel: The Rise of Popular Feminism in Peru (1966), and Meatpackers and Beef Barons: Company Town in a Global Economy (1994).

Carol was also an artist. A eulogy broadcast on radio station WBAI in New York stated, “Shredding tiny bits of paper into collages, her art chronicled her life of activism, love in all its forms, and the stories of women and people in struggle throughout the world.” She had presented a visual memoir about her art at the Meadowbrook Art Center in rural Newton this last May.

She is survived by: two sisters, Mary Lou Goertzen and Suzanne Osborn; a brother, Jim Rich; three sons and their spouses, Joel Andreas and Ay Vinijkul, Peter Andreas and Jasmina Burdzovic Andreas, and Ronald Andreas and Dawn Blanken; and her grandson, Derek Andreas (Ronald and Dawn's son).
