Hartman, Evelyn (Evy) M
The Newton Kansan
Evelyn (Evy) M. Hartman
Evelyn (Evy) M. Hartman, 89, went to be
with the Lord on Monday, August 9, 2021 at her home in North Newton,
Kansas. Evelyn was born April 16, 1932 to Ed and Elvina (Koehn) Ediger
in Newton, Kansas.
On October 15, 1950, Evelyn married Chester
Hartman, her husband of 69 ½ years, in Newton, Kansas, at the
Evangelical United Brethren Church. Evelyn is survived by her sisters
Betty Ediger and Ruby Stucky both of Newton, and brother Pete Ediger of
Newton; children: Sharon (Lontie) Jantz of Moundridge, Debbie (Mike)
Miles of North Newton; grandchildren: Neil (Ashley) Jantz of Mulvane,
Brad (Kali) Jantz of Moundridge; and 4 great-grandchildren: Haylee,
Trey, Aubree and Chase.
While Evelyn was raising her two
daughters, she made and delivered wedding cakes for 10 years. She also
loved to cook and make pies and would make many pies for the MCC sale
each year. She made the best pie crust and the best potato salad. She
loved classic cars and driving around. A few of her favorites that she
owned was a 1952 Chevrolet, 1962 blue Buick Wildcat, 1976 black Chevy
Capri and a 1975 white Chevy Capri. The last car that she owned was a
2009 white Volvo convertible. Evelyn had a favorite past time of
doodling, on whatever she had available, when talking on the phone to
family and friends. She also enjoyed taking care of her two grandsons
when she was given the opportunity. She loved to grow trees, plants and
flowers indoors and outdoors and everything she planted would thrive.
Her favorite tree was her palm tree. She started with a seed and brought
it back in a Styrofoam cup when visiting her family in California.
Evelyn was a very caring and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother.
When the family moved to Halstead, Kansas, Evelyn worked at the
Halstead Hospital in Housekeeping for 29 ½ years and was eventually
promoted to Head of Housekeeping. She also entered a poster contest at
the hospital and won first place and received $100. After retiring from
the Halstead Hospital, Evelyn supported and helped her husband at his
auction house that he operated for 7 ½ years in Halstead.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Clifford Ediger
and great-granddaughter, Abigail Jantz. She was also preceded in death
by her brother-in-law, Johnny Stucky, and sister-in-law, Patricia
Ediger.
Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August
18, 2021, at the First Baptist Church, 6th and Poplar, Newton, Kansas
with Pastor Chip Bungard officiating. There will be a graveside ceremony
following the service at Halstead Cemetery. The family welcomes friends
to rejoin them for pie and coffee at the First Baptist Church following
the graveside service.
Evelyn was a member of the First Church
of the Nazarene and on Easter Sunday morning in 1966, she accepted
Jesus as her Savior. Two weeks later on April 24th she was baptized upon
confession of her faith.
In lieu of memorials, the family
requests that flowers or plants be sent to the First Baptist Church, in
care of Petersen Funeral Home.
