Angel "Ace" Torres

Peabody - Angel "Ace" Torres, 97, lifelong Peabody resident, died Friday (July 2, 2021) while attending the Mexican-American Fast Pitch Tournament with his family and friends in Newton.

He was born on October 2, 1923 in Peabody, Kansas, the son of Jesus and Manuela Melendez Torres. Angel graduated from Peabody High School in 1943, shortly after which he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was discharged in 1946 as a Pharmacist's Mate Third Class and returned to Peabody.

While in high school he started working for the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring after 40 years as a Trackman.

He married Theresa Maria Segovia on October 27, 1951 in Newton. They made their home in Peabody and were very active in the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She died on February 11, 1986.

Angel was a longtime member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton and the Peabody American Legion. He was the last surviving member of the original fast pitch team that played in the first Mexican-American Tournament 73 years ago. He had been looking forward to attending this year's event.

Survivors include his daughter Patsy Torres Milton of the home in Peabody; son Michael Torres of Topeka; grandchildren Mika and Gabriel Torres, Jonathan, Theresa and Christopher Milton; and 14 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Robert Torres and wife Belen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters Margaret Garcia along with Jennie Garcia and husband Ralph all of Newton; and son-in-law Larry Cramer of Topeka.

"Ace" is preceded in death by his parent; wife; daughter Auggie Cramer; brother Felix Torres; sisters Esther Monares, Carmen Vega, Lupe Llamas; and two infant sisters Augustina and Refugio Torres.

The casket will be open at the funeral home on Tuesday (July 13th) between 1:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M., where the family will receive friends between 6:00 and 8:00 P.M.

The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday (July 14th) followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M., both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton. Interment will be in the Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody, Kansas.

A memorial has been established with the Peabody Community Foundation, Peabody American Legion, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
