Nachtigal, Lonny Layne

The Newton Kansan

Lonny Layne Nachtigal

Jacksonville, FL - Lonny Layne Nachtigal, 58, went to be with the Lord on November 18, 2019, in Jacksonville, FL, after a battle with cancer. Lonny was born on December 16, 1960, to Virgil and Viola (Woelk) Nachtigal in Newton.

He was in the Newton High School class of 1978. He was baptized upon confession of faith at First Mennonite Church on 6-1-1975. Lonny loved his Savior Jesus, always sharing the good news of Jesus, His love, and the salvation message with others. He enjoyed growing up by Sand Creek and Athletic Park; this is where his love for the outdoors and nature came from. As a teenager, he was involved with 4-H where his dad was the woodworking leader for the Kansas Jayhawkers 4-H Club. He learned how to cook and sew and cooking became a passion of his throughout his life. He was also very artistic in drawing and writing.

He held many jobs throughout his life: wheat harvest crew from Texas to North Dakota, oil rigging in the Gulf of Mexico, maintenance at the Kansas Coliseum, certified travel agent, and most recently was a handyman. He never knew a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in need, especially having a heart for the homeless. He moved from Newton, to Kansas City, and then to Florida in 2002 living in Jacksonville and then Melbourne. He said he would never move back to live in cold Kansas. He loved the sun, beach, and surfing; spending many hours at the beach. Even though he lived in Florida, he was still an avid Royals and Kansas City Chiefs fan. He always dressed in Chiefs attire on game day.

He is survived by his brother Kelly (Gale) Nachtigal, sister Becky (Bob) Davidson, niece Julia (Jeremy) Caraway, great niece Serenity Davidson, great nephew Ethan McVey, uncles Harry (Emily) Nachtigal, LeRoy (Marcella) Woelk, Charles (Mary Ann) Woelk and many cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Randyln, and grandparents.
