On January 25, 2022, Adelyn Smith, beloved mother of Connie
Sue Skibbe and Leo Michael Smith, passed away at the age of 88 in her home near
Newton, Kansas.
Adelyn was born September 3, 1933 in Goessel, Kansas to
Peter and Clara Unruh. She received her high school diploma from Whitewater
High School. She then went to Hutchinson Business College where she learned
typing and shorthand. Following her school years, Adelyn worked at various office jobs in
Wichita followed by 20 years at Santa Fe Railroad until she retired.
On December 13, 1953, Adelyn married Leo Neal Smith, her
high school sweetheart. They raised their two children in the Newton area.
Adelyn was born into a poor rural family during the Great
Depression. There was always enough to eat as her mother baked bread daily and
canned food for the winter months. If Adelyn was hungry, she would eat the
mulberries that grew near the house. As an adult, she was quite thrifty. She
had a passion for family, reading her Bible and attending church. She was a
prayer warrior and in the last fifteen years of her life was rarely seen with
the T.V. on but she always had her Bible nearby. She loved quoting Bible
verses.
Adelyn was preceded in death by her father Peter Unruh,
mother Clara Unruh, and brothers Roy and Eldon Unruh. She is survived by her
daughter Connie Skibbe, her son Leo Michael Smith, grandchildren Nichole
(Smith)Perry, Ryan Smith, Justin Smith, Eric Skibbe, and Christopher Skibbe.
She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Ryleigh Skibbe, Sawyer Skibbe,
Lincoln Skibbe, Tanner Skibbe and Abriel Smith, Isabella Smith, Jenna Smith and
Xavier Smith.
