Obituary

Helen Joy Wehry, 88, died Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the Ascension Via Christi Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita, KS.

She was born on October 24, 1933 in McPherson, KS to Martin C. and Elsie (Stucky) Schrag. Helen was raised in the Moundridge, KS area and was a 1952 graduate of Moundridge High School.  On February 12, 1954 she married Harvey W. Wehry, Jr. He preceded her in death in April, 1995.  She worked many years as a teller at several local banks in Newton, worked at the Sears Catalog store, and after ?retiring? from full-time work, she worked at Len & Flo?s Kitchen, Pak-Mail, and Midland National Bank in downtown Newton.

Helen was a charter member of Faith Mennonite Church, Newton. She served on several church committees over the years and has helped coordinate and serve many meals in Faith?s Fellowship Hall. In her later years she also enjoyed getting together with the ?Golden Gals? from church.  She was a member of Business and Professional Women (BPW) for many years. She held almost every office in that organization. She was also named Newton?s BPW woman of the year. Helen loved to bake and cook, which always resulted in fabulous food. She was known for her wonderful meals and her delicious sour cream twists and cinnamon rolls. Helen always had a smile to give to friends and strangers alike.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey, parents, Martin & Elsie Schrag, son Timmy, daughter Debbie (Wehry) Murry, and sister Carol Penner.  She is survived by daughter Janice Nesser of Newton, daughter Karen Osborne and her husband David of Euless, TX, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A private family interment was held at Greenwood Cemetery Newton, Kansas.  A Celebration of Life will be held in memory of Helen J. Wehry, Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 11:00am, Faith Mennonite Church, 2100 N. Anderson Rd, Newton, KS.  A memorial has been established with K.S.U. Center for Basic Cancer Research, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 East Broadway, Newton, Ks 67114.
