Daniel Craig Henderson-61, passed away December 22, 2018 at home in Marion Kansas after a months long battle with Cancer.
Dan was born December 24, 1956 at McConnell Air Force Base, Wichita Kansas to Air Force Radiology Technologist Sgt. Roy T. (Tom) Henderson and Norma Henderson. As a proud Air Force Brat, he grew up in Kansas, Alabama, Idaho, Oklahoma, the Philippines, back to Kansas, Oklahoma and the Philippines, then to California, and Kansas.
Daniel served his entire life helping people in one way or another in various positions in Health Care. He worked as an EMT in Halstead, McPherson and Wichita Ks early in his career. He was in the Kansas EMT Class of One and served for a time as the Director for the Halstead Ambulance Department. Upon Graduation from Nursing School, he worked as an RN in the ER at Wesley Medical Center, Shawnee Mission Medical Center and then Research Medical Center.
Dan was a Desert Storm Veteran. He served Honorably in the Kansas and Missouri National Guards as well as the U.S. Army Reserves.
His postings included the 410th Medevac, the 1st 137th Mechanical Infantry, Company Commander for Headquarters Company and Medical Platoon Leader, 1st 169th Clearing Company, and Head Nurse for the 135th MASH Unit. He served in Task Force 354 in Panama during Desert Storm where he was also activated separate from his Unit for certain assignments.
While serving in the Guard and Reserves, Dan also worked as the Head Nurse at the Warrensburg Medical Center in Missouri and the Interventional Radiology Department at Research Medical Center in Kansas City. He also owned and operated the Rocking H Ranch.
In 2008 he started employment at Fort Riley Kansas as a Civil Service Clinic Administrator and then as Nurse Case Manager at Irwin Army Medical Hospital for their Suicide Prevention Program, and as a Behavioral Health Case Manager while also working with The Wounded Warriors Program. Dan considered his biggest accomplishment to be helping soldiers with PTSD and was justifiably proud of never having lost a soldier to suicide while under his care.
He served as an instructor for ACLS, BCLS, PALS, Non Crisis Preventer Intervention, and for the Basic Concepts of Terrorism through The National Fire Academy and the Department of Justice. Dan also served on the Military Advisory Committee American Association of Critical Care Nurses. He was an amazing man who will be truly missed by Family, Velcroed Family, Friends and Former Comrades.
Survivors include: Wife of 25 years Lois Henderson, Marion KS, Children: Dana Canaday (Josh), Wichita KS, Kayla Dean (Kenny), Sacramento CA, and Brandon Thomas, KC MO. His Grandchildren Aleena Wedel, Abrianna Wedel, Jamie Kemp and Justin Kemp. Father Tom Henderson (Annette), Newton KS, Brother Kevin Henderson (Diane), Halstead KS, Sister Lori Rose(Rick), Huntsville TX, Nephew Thomas Rose, and Nieces Victoria Rose and Samantha Henderson. He was preceded in death by his mother Norma Henderson and his son Kerry Henderson.
Visitation will be from 4 pm to 8 pm Friday December 28 at Old Mission Mortuary, 3421 E. 21st, Wichita Kansas. The Funeral Service will be at 11:30 Saturday, December 29 at the Old Mission Mortuary Chapel with Internment following at the Wichita Park Cemetery at 3424 E. 21stStreet in Wichita Ks.
