1939 - 2021
Doris Jane (Mendel) Schmidt, 82, passed away on Monday
December 20, 2021, in Omaha, NE. She was born on October 29, 1939, in Freeman,
SD, to Kathryn Laura Hofer and Jacob Mendel, Jr., the third of three children.
She was raised on the family farm near Freeman and attended Freeman Public
School, Freeman Academy, and Freeman Jr. College. She married Virgil P. Schmidt
on Aug. 30, 1959, in Freeman, SD, and lived in North Newton until 2019.
Doris was employed by the General Conference Mennonite
Church and Mennonite Church USA for many years. She was an active member of
Faith Mennonite Church in Newton and enjoyed volunteer service, including close
to 30 years assisting at the Newton Et Cetera Shop. Survivors include: a son,
Keith V. Schmidt (Cheryl Schmidt) of Omaha, NE; two daughters, Kathryn M.
Steely (Jeff Steely) of Hewitt, TX, and Karma J. Kauffman (Karl Kauffman) of
Asheville, NC; a brother, Laverne Mendel (Janice Mendel) of Waterloo, IA; five
grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Private family graveside service
and memorial service will be held at a later date.
