NEWTON ? Wilmer G. Classen, 91, died Wednesday (January 12,
2022) at the NMC Health in Newton, Ks.
He was born on April 18, 1930 in Wichita, Kansas the son of
Henry A. and Sara Dick Classen. Wilmer was raised in Meade, Kansas, graduating
in 1949 from Meade Bible Academy.
He attended Tabor College and later graduated from the
Kansas City General Hospital Nursing Program where he became a Nurse
Anesthetist. Wilmer and Verna Jean Hiebert were married
Wilmer and Verna Jean Hiebert were married on March 5, 1954
in McPherson, Kansas. They moved from Kansas City to Newton in 1960.
He went to work in Newton at Bethel Deaconess Hospital as
well as Axtell Hospital, later working at the V.A. Hospital in Wichita,
retiring in the mid 1990?s.
Wilmer was an active member of Koerner Heights Church of the
Mennonite Brethren. He enjoyed drinking coffee with his friends in Newton at
Braum?s and McDonald?s. Through the years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping
and working in his yard.
Survivors include his wife Verna of the home in Newton; son
Michael Classen of Burlington, Ks.; daughters Sharon Schroeder and husband
Matthew of Littleton, Colo., and Diane Wingert and husband George of Ottawa,
Ks.; brother Allen Classen of Liberal, Ks.; and four grandchildren Jackson
Wingert, Claire Wingert, Sarah Schroeder, and Josh Schroeder.
Wilmer is preceded in death by his parents and sisters
Arlene Toews, Lovella Dalke, Verna Hamm.
Family interment services will be held at Greenwood
Cemetery.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday
(January 15, 2022) at Koerner Heights Church in Newton.
The casket will be open at the funeral home on Friday (Jan.
14th) between 1:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M., where the family will receive friends
between 5:00 and 7:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with the
Kitchen Fund of Koerner Heights Church, contributions may be sent to Broadway
Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
