Johnson, Cyrus

Prominent Dentist Commits Suicide

NEWTON - Prominent Dentist Commits Suicide.  Dr. C. E. Johnson, a well known dentist of Newton committed suicide Friday morning at his home at 903 Main Street, shooting himself while the family was at breakfast.

He had been in ill health for a few weeks and not able to work at his office, but was able to be about the house.  The malady had the effect to make him feel despondent and he apparently brooded and became despairing.

After his breakfast had been brought to his room, he urged his wife to go and eat with the children, it being her custom to sit with him while he ate.  In a short time the family heard the report of a gun in the bath room and running there found the door locked.  Entrance was gained through a window, and his body lay on the floor, shot through the heart.  The shot gun had been taken apart some time before but apparently with aberration of mind he had calmly calculated to use it and had chosen the chance to assemble the parts and be alone in the act of self destruction.

The terrible calamity falls heavily on the wife and children ? Flora, Olive, Arthur, and Lewis ? in the loss of the husband and father, the sympathy of all go out to them.

Dr. Johnson was an excellent dentist and had practiced his profession in Newton for nearly thirty years.

The funeral service was held at the Duff undertaking parlors Sunday morning at 10 o'clock.  Rev. R. L. George officiating.  The Newton Journal, Newton Kansas.  Friday, March 21, 1919.  Page 1.
