NEWTON: John Eldon Wiebe, 99, died
Sunday (July 24, 2022) at the Bethesda Home in Goessel, Kansas.
He was born on May 16, 1923 in Newton,
the son of John P. and Otillie Becker Wiebe. John was a lifelong
resident of Newton, graduating from Newton High School in 1941.
After high school John went to work at
Boeing Aircraft in Wichita. He served in the Army Air Force during
World War II, between 1943 and 1946. Returning to Newton, John went
to work for Cessna Aircraft and later Lear Jet as a planner, retiring
in 1984.
He married Janett M. Duerksen on May
25, 1974. He was a longtime member of First Mennonite Church in
Newton.
John was an avid collector of toy
trains and was a very active member of the Wheat, Heritage, Engine
and Thrashing Club. Through the years he was also a member of the
American Legion, Santa Fe Trail Assoc., and the Cottonwood Crossing
Chapter of Santa Fe Trail Association. He enjoyed going to auctions,
flea markets, and swap meets.
He is survived by his wife Janett of
the home in Newton; several nieces and nephews; along with his
in-laws Dorothy Duerksen Sebes and husband Dennis Sebes of Hanston,
Ks., and Luetta Duerksen of Wichita.
John is preceded in death by his
parents; sibling Ericka Stucky, Elyse Allison, Dallas Wiebe, Esther
Norton, twins Doris Dunlavy and Delores May Thomas, and Ronald Wiebe.
Graveside and interment services will
be held at 3:00 P.M., Tuesday (July 26, 2022) at the Greenwood
Cemetery in Newton.
The casket will remain closed.
