Obituary

John Wesley Liggett, 95, of Brookings, OR died Dec. 16, 2003 of natural causes at a Brookings care facility. Mr. Liggett was born Oct. 2, 1908 in Newton, KS to Harvey Gilbert and Stella Rebecca (Heagy) Liggett. He married Flossie Mae Vanderford in 1944 and they have one daughter, Roberta. He graduated from a California University. Mr. Liggett worked as a investor, and as a stock market broker for 60 years of his life. He also owned and managed a wheat farm that he later donated to Bethel College at Newton, KS. Mr. Liggett was a solitary man and didn't draw attention to himself. He was a strong proponent of education and a benefactor. He paid for building a school for slum children at Bangkok, Thailand. He donated millions to Wichita State University, Friends University, and Bethel College at Newton, KS.
