MAX SMILEY DEAD

Max Smiley, 728 State State St., an insurance supervisor for National Fidelity Life Insurance Company and a former star basketball player for Emporia State College, died unexpectedly Saturday evening at the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. J. D. Adam, 1236 Highland St. The Smiley family had returned from an outing at Lake Kahola when Mr. Smiley suffered a heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, in the McVey Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Clyde S. Clark, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Born June 19th, 1924, at Halstead, Mr. Smiley was the son of Marshall L. and May Bell Caldwell Smiley. He attended Emporia State College, where he was a member of the College's champion basketball team from 1947 through 1949, and was graduated in 1950. He taught school and coached athletics at Elmdale, Anthony, and Hope for six years before returning to Emporia two years ago. Surviving are his wife and three children, Byron Marshall, Russell Max and Susan Dale, of the home; his mother; three sisters, Cuba Fling, Margaret Wentz and Maxine Casey, Wichita; and a brother, Tex Smiley, Lynchburg, Va. A brother, Clifford, preceded him in death. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and the Life Insurance Underwriters.
