Koch, Ethel

Ethel Koch Ethel graduated from Newton (Ks.) High School in 1912 and attended Grace Hospital Nursing School in Hutchinson, Kansas and then transferred to the School of Nursing at Axtell Hospital in Newton, Kansas from which she graduated in 1924.
She became a registered nurse and practiced at the hospital in Spearville, Kansas. She acted as de facto administrator of that hospital during the 1930s duststorms and depression. She was quite plain-spoken about how local physicians abandoned the hospital as a non-paying proposition when the nurses would not reject emergency cases of the poor; but the nurses kept it going anyway.
In 1944 she moved to Dodge City where she worked as nurse at St. Anthony and Trinity Hospitals and did some private nursing until her retirement in 1967.
