Betty Dody, Newton, KS, former director
and owner of Candy Cane Corner Nursery School, passed away November
7, 2022, at the age of 90. She was born December 4, 1931, in Bucklin,
Kansas to Frank and Bertha Hoffman. She was a 1949 graduate of
Bucklin High School. In 1951 she received an associate?s degree and
teaching certificate from Dodge City Junior College, and taught
school in rural Dodge City, KS. She married Donald E. Dody August 6,
1950, at the First United Methodist Church in Bucklin, KS, and
remained married to Don for 70 years until his death in 2020.
Betty spent her entire career providing
an unconditional loving, nurturing and learning environment for many
children in Newton as owner of Candy Cane Corner Nursery School for
30 years; and after retirement in 1996, she was Lead Staff for
Infants at Sunshine Day Care Center. She was honored during her
career to be selected in 1969 as Business and Professional Newton
Area Women of the Year. She was a member of First United Methodist
Church in Newton where she volunteered in the church nursery and was
a member of Rachel Circle and UMW. She had fond memories as a member
of the Sassy-Brassy Red Hatters.
Betty is survived by her son, Terry
(Deb Scott) Dody of Manhattan, KS; daughters, Susan Hutton of Wichita
and Judy (Dean Long) Carnes of Overland Park, KS; former
daughter-in-law, Ginger Dody of Emporia, KS, 8 grandchildren, 7
great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
Betty was predeceased by her husband,
Don Dody; brother, Harold Hoffman; great-grandson, Lawson Dody; and
son-in-law, Mark B. Hutton.
Funeral service will be held at 10
a.m., November 17, 2022, in the chapel at Petersen?s Family Funeral
Home, 215 N. Main, Newton, KS 67114. Private family burial will
follow funeral service. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m.
to service time Thursday.
