Susan Koehn 88 died November 29, 2022
at Comfort Care Home in Newton. She was born March 14, 1934 in
Newton, Kansas to Albert A and Susanna ?Jane? (Krehbiel) Goering.
On October 21, 1952 she married Charles E Koehn Sr. in Newton and he
preceded her in death on October 22, 2004.
Susan was a longtime active member of
St. Matthew?s Episcopal Church in Newton. She served as the
treasurer and on the governing board.
Susan had a lifetime of involvement in
the Newton Community. A few of her posts include being a member of
the board of directors for the Charles Olsen Memorial Music
Scholarship, a member of the Kauffman Museums board, a member of the
Bethel College Association board and a past president of the Junior
Reading Circle.
In 2014 she was named a Newton/North
Newton woman of the year.
A graduate and class valedictorian of
Newton High School in 1952 Susan was honored in 2019 to receive the
Newton High School Distinguished Alumni Award.
She was an animal lover and shared her
beloved dog Shorty with the community as a therapy dog that she
trained herself.
When most people would be slowing down
in life, Susan put her energy and passion into the Carriage Factory
Art Gallery. The gallery was suffering and considering closing their
doors. She refused to give up on the organization that now is
thriving in downtown Newton. She served as the president for 10 years
well into her 80?s.
Susan is survived by her sons Charles
E. Koehn Jr.; Matthew (Amy) Koehn; daughter Karen (Scott) Barnhart;
brother in law Clay Hedrick and 5 grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her
parents, husband and sister Nancy Hedrick
A memorial service will be held on
December 15th at 10am at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Newton with
The Reverend Richard Osborn, Celebrant. Private family interment will
be in the Greenwood Cemetery Newton.
