Dennis Herman

Dennis R. Herman died Wednesday, December 7, 2022 in Wichita. Dennis was born October 24, 1946, the only child of John T. and Mildred I. (Holiday) in Ashland, Kansas. He attended Ashland schools, graduating in 1964. Following graduation, he worked for Bliss Plumbing in Ashland. Along with his best friend, Ivan, he enlisted in the Navy in February 1966. Following basic training at Port Hueneme he was assigned to the MCB 11. His first tour of duty in Vietnam was in Dong Ha from April thru December 1967, thirty days were served in Khe-Shan. His second tour was in Quang-Tri from May 1968 thru February 1969. He was granted an early release from the Navy. In May 1969, he joined the Kansas Gas Service as a pipe fitter, later becoming a project manager; he worked as a plumber for Brookshier Plumbing. He was hired by Halstead Hospital, originally as a maintenance worker, later becoming the Director of Maintenance, Housekeeping and Security, where he remained for twenty years. While residing in Halstead he was a member of the Men?s Club at Sacred Heart Church, a volunteer of the Halstead Fire Department and a Reserve Officer of the Halstead Police Department.

He worked as a Project Manager at Central Air Conditioning for seven years and Nabholz Construction for eight years. Following retirement, he enjoyed attending and supporting his grandkids many sporting events and other activities. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, fishing at Table Rock Lake, watching his granddaughter ride horses, and watching K-State and KC Chiefs football. He was proud to be a Navy Seabee Vietnam Veteran.

He married Joanne Preisner on August 16, 1969 in Ashland, Kansas, she survives of the home in Newton. Also survived by those who made him both proud and happy; his children: Clint (Carrie) of Halstead and Jeni (Donald) of Newton and grandsons, Cole and Connor Herman and his ?favorite? granddaughter, Jaeann

James. Also survived by sisters-in-laws Jeanne Sturgeon (Ron) of Hutchinson, Darlene Preisner, of Denver and Jan Preisner, of Topeka. As well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-laws, Frank, Jim, and Bob Preisner and sister-in law, Virginia Inman. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 16 at Sacred Heart Church, Halstead with Father Andrew Heiman officiating. Inurnment and Naval Honors will follow at Halstead Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Kansas Learning Center for Health in care of Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead.
