Schroeder, John

John Schroeder John Schroeder, 85, died Monday (March 20, 2006) at Asbury Park Healthcare in Newton.
He was born Sept. 17, 1920, to Peter M. and Agnes (Schmidt) Schroeder in Goessel. They preceded him in death. He married Gracie Anna Abrahams Dec. 10, 1949. She survives of the home.
John grew up in the Goessel area and graduated from Goessel High School in 1938. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in Laredo, Texas. In 1950, he moved to North Newton where he lived and worked as a homebuilder for many years. John was an active member of Bethel College Mennonite Church. Throughout the years, John built over 300 homes in Newton and the surrounding area. He came from a long line of builders, successfully carrying on the craft taught to him by both his father and grandfather.
He took pride in his work and strived to always do the best job possible. Even after his "retirement," he continued building and worked on houses for Habitat for Humanity and the Mennonite Central Committee's Houses for Hunger project.
John's family was the love of his life. His wife, son, daughter, their spouses, and his four grandchildren were immensely important to him and a great source of pleasure and delight. His favorite pastimes ranged from family dinners to playing dominos with his grandchildren. His kind and gentle manner were both an inspiration and a source of strength for his family and those who knew him.
Other survivors include: a brother, Jeffrey Schroeder and wife Mary Kay of Los Alamos, N.M.; a daughter, Catherine Holdeman and husband Delvin of Wichita; a sister, Dora Schmidt and husband Sam of Goessel; and four grandchildren, Jessica, John (Wes), Emily and Meghan Schroeder all of Los Alamos, N.M.
He also was preceded in death by: brothers, Anton Schroeder and Ewald Schroeder; and a sister, Verna Portlock.
Funeral service was Thursday at Bethel College Mennonite Church with Pastor Heidi Regier Kreider officiating.
Private burial was in Goessel Mennonite Church Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Mennonite Central Committee in care of the funeral home.
