Carl Dreyer Drowned
Death Notice
Carl Dreyer Drowned. A distressed incident occured near Hesston Monday afternoon, when Carl Dreyer was drowned in the high waters of Emmett Creek. The young man was out swimming in a pasture south of Hesston. A number of other young men were also in swimming, but were about a hundred yards away when he called for help. One of the boys succeeded in getting hold of the drowning companion, but on account of his frantic struggles was forced to let go. Carl went down again and did not re-appear. This was about 1:30 in the afternoon and at 4:20 the body was recovered at a place very close to where the last struggle occured.
A pulmotor had been brought from Newton, but the attempt to restore respiration was fruitless. Carl was not a very good swimmer and it is thought that upon getting out into the channel of the stream he found the current too swift for his strength. The water was deep in the main channel and poured through like a mill race. In searching for the body it was necessary to stretch a long rope across the deep part of the stream andmen who dove to the creek bed held to the rope in order to keep from being swept down stream.
Carl Dreyer was 18 years old and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dreyer, who are prominent people of the Hesston community. Besides his parents he is survived by 2 brothers and a sister. He was a clean young man and was well liked by the people of the town. He was a favorite member of the Hesston ball team in which organization he played first base.
