Henry P. Patterson, 68, died suddenly at his home shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday, following a stroke of apoplexy. While Mr. Patterson had not been feeling well, he walked to the doctor's office on Wednesday and was apparently as well as he had been for some time. At 11 p.m. Wednesday night he called his daughter to dress his foot, a corn having been giving him some pain. At 1 o'clock his wife felt that something was wrong and when she called the other members of the family, they found him unconscious and he passed away before the doctor arrived.
Mr. Patterson has lived in Newton for many years, being employed by the Santa Fe at the rail mill until 2 weeks ago, when he was taken ill. He came in contact with practically all the other employees at the mill and he was popular and well liked. He always greeted them with a cheerful word and will be missed at his post of duty.
Mr. Patterson was the last of a family of 12 children. He was a son of James and Jane (Jaygo) Patterson, both natives of Ireland. he was born in Pittsfield, Illinois, on December 23, 1862. When he became a young man he went to Chicago to work for a time and then came west where he found employment on the Eilert homestead near Whitewater. In the Eilert home was a daughter, Katherine, and she became the bride of Mr. Patterson on March 2, 1887 at Whitewater. 8 children were born to this union, 7 of whom survive. They are Elizabeth Guinn, at home, Mrs. Fred Fuge of Pratt; Mrs. D.M. Farmer or San Francisco, and James, Ed, Mrs. Roy Darling, and Mrs. Lyle Norton, all of Newton.
