An accident earlier this afternoon on Interstate 135 just north of the outlet mall resulted in one fatality.
Harvey County Sheriff Chad Gay said one female was killed, and the accident involved a semi-truck and car.
Killed in the accident was Konner Lynne Hayes, 29, of Newton, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report. Her family has been notified. She was the driver of a 2017 Hyundai. The driver of the other vehicle, a 2024 Freightliner, was Salpyyev Suleyman of Jacksonville, Fla. He was not injured, according to the report.
?Near mile marker 28, vehicle 1 (the Hyundai) crossed the median for an unknown reason, at which time it collided with vehicle 2 (the semi truck),? a KHP report stated. The Hyundai came to rest facing southwest in the left-hand lane, and the truck came to rest jack-knifed across both northbound lanes on I-135, the report said. The KHP report stated the driver of the Hyundai was not using a safety restraint while the other driver was.
The accident also backed up northbound traffic, and traffic was also diverted to the overpass just near the outlet mall.
