Man Arrested For Robbery
Harvey County Now 07 Apr 2025
A man robbed Walgreens of cash on Sunday. Shortly after, Newton Police arrested a suspect in the crime. The robbery occurred around 11 a.m. Sunday, according to the Newton Police Department. Dept. Chief Scott Powell said the store reported that a man entered, and passed a note to a Walgreens Employee stating he had a gun and directing them to hand over the store?s money. The employee emptied the cash register and the suspect fled on foot with the money. The store called in the crime after the man left.
?The call came out and they had a description of him,? Powell said. ?He was seen running through the Dillons parking lot to the south. Our officers drove around and saw a guy acting funny. Powell said they observed the man ducking behind a shed and car before entering a Church at 10th and Oak Street. He said officers went into the Church and arrested the man, Joshua Ewing, without incident. No gun was found on Ewing. Powell said police did find cash matching the exact amount stolen from Walgreens on Ewing. He also said Ewing matched the appearance of the man seen on the Walgreens security camera system. He said he was also wearing the same clothing as he was wearing when released from the Harvey County Detention Center around 10 a.m. that day. Ewing was in the Detention Center after being picked up on a warrant for a probation violation, according to Powell. Ewing according to court documents faces a felony theft case in Sedgwick County accused of a crime occurring in December of 2024, and posted bond in that case on March 13. He had a previous felony possession of methamphetamine conviction in Harvey County in 2021. An additional theft case against Ewing that year was dismissed. Harvey County Now Staff.
