William Philip Palmer, known as Phil to most, passed away on March 18, 2026, at NMC Health in Newton, Kansas. Born on December 4, 1947, in Newton, Phil's remarkable life was marked by
resilience, dedication, and an unwavering spirit.
Phil was a polio survivor who, at the age of 18 months, became paralyzed from the waist down. Throughout his life, he used a wheelchair, yet he never allowed his physical challenges to define
him or limit his dreams. It was truly inspiring how much he accomplished and contributed, demonstrating generosity and friendliness that touched all who knew him.
A proud graduate of Newton High School?s class of 1966, Phil pursued higher education at Emporia State Teacher?s College, later Emporia State University, earning a degree in
accounting with a minor in economics in 1970. His professional career spanned nearly three decades at Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America, where he served in various administrative roles. For 15 years, he also devoted himself
as a job coach at the Community Service Program at Prairie View, positively impacting many lives through his work.
Phil was deeply committed to his faith. A lifetime member of St. Mary Catholic Church, he also attended Faith Mennonite Church throughout his married years. His spiritual life was an important
foundation, guiding his kindness and advocacy.
His love for the outdoors was evident in his fondness for gardening and volunteer work, particularly caring for flower beds and trees. Phil enjoyed sports and fishing, hobbies that brought
him joy and connection with nature. He was a passionate supporter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters and was a steadfast advocate for individuals with disabilities, reflecting his lifelong commitment to fostering inclusion and support.
He was also a proud recipient of the American Red Cross?s Give Life Hero award, for his donation of 120 pints of blood over the years.
Phil is survived by his beloved wife, Lois (Keeney) Palmer, who shared his life and lifted his spirits every day; his sister, Carolyn Palmer of Newton; sister, Phyllis (Duane) Graber of
Mount Pleasant, Iowa; and brother, Charles (Mary) Palmer of Saginaw, Texas. Together, they carry forward the legacy of a man whose strength, generosity, and compassion enriched their lives. He was preceded in death by his
parents, William Charles and Bonnie Jean (Haun) Palmer.
Visitation for Phil will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Petersen Family Funeral Home in Newton, Kansas. A Rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. for those
who would like to join. A Mass of Christian Burial service will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Newton. Burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or Faith Mennonite Church, and left in the care of the funeral home.
Phil?s life was a testament to courage, kindness, and perseverance. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him and those touched by his spirit. In honoring his journey,
we remember a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and gave selflessly.
